Care of Wood and other Hard Surface Products

The wood products sold by Sheffield are constructed to be the beautiful heirlooms of future generations. Several coatings of lacquer protect most of our wood products. This lacquer will last indefinitely under controlled conditions. However, lacquer is not impervious to scratches, dents, direct sunlight, spills of alcoholic beverages, etc.

We recommend the following care:

Immediately clean spills or smudges of foodstuffs or beverages with a soft clean cloth, preferably by blotting to avoid scratches. Frequently dust the exposed surfaces with a clean, soft, natural cloth that is damp with water. Always wipe in the same direction as the wood grain. Dry the surface with another dry cloth. All dust is abrasive... Never forcefully wipe off dust!

Infrequently polish your furniture with a non-silicon base furniture polish made by a reputable manufacturer. Follow instructions, but do dust immediately before polishing and always use a soft, natural cloth. If surface damage occurs, please contact our customer service department for a recommendation.

Direct sunlight could cause some deterioration of the original finish over time. Strive to keep your valuable furniture items shielded from daily exposure to direct sunlight.

Decorative Hardware can be cared for in the same manner as wood surfaces. Simply follow our recommendations for dusting and polishing. Do not use metal cleaners on any hardware.

CARE OF MARBLE, GRANITE AND OTHER STONE SURFACES: Clean stone surfaces with a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Use a soft cloth. Too much soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar, or other acids. Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth. Change the rinse water frequently. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.

CARE OF LUCITETM: Wipe acrylic on a daily basis with a soft moist cloth to keep dust away. Do not use abrasives or bottled cleaners that have alcohol or ammonia as they can dull the clear finish. Acrylic is soft and very easy to polish; most soft metal polishes (brass, aluminum) will remove scratches. Do not use a paper towel to clean acrylic, as it will scratch the surface. Use a soft moist cloth or Polish Mates by Novus TM. To clean and polish acrylic, we recommend two products by NovusTM: Novus #1 and Novus #2. Novus #1 is designed for new acrylics. It cleans them to a lustrous shine, resists fogging, repels dust and eliminates static. Novus #2 will remove fine scratches, haziness and abrasions from most plastics.
