Craftsmen in the original L. & J.G. Stickley factory in Fayetteville, New York, circa 1905
Over one hundred years ago, Stickley first introduced Mission furniture. These simple and sturdy designs quickly became an unrivaled standard of both exceptional beauty and careful construction. Today, Stickley continues this legacy by crafting both new and reissued designs in a celebration of the solid, comfortable and honest furniture of the American Arts & Crafts movement.
Als Ik Kan — "to the best of my ability,"
has always been Stickley's guiding principle. The old Flemish
craftsman's phrase was marked right on the product in the early
years, to assure customers that every piece of Stickley furniture
was made with skill, determination & integrity.
THE STICKLEY DIFFERENCE
From Generation to Generation
Like his father and grandfather before him, Edward Audi doesn’t
only stand behind Stickley furniture, he literally stands in it! Side
hung and center guided drawers, along with dovetailed cross
rails allow for incredible strength. We invite you to discover one
of the many Stickley differences that provide enduring quality
from generation to generation.
The details shown explain a few of Stickley’s unique and time-honored construction techniques. As you become familiar with distinguishing characteristics of fine furniture, bear in mind that most of these techniques are used only by Stickley.
Quartersawn White Oak
A method of sawing parallel to the oak’s
medullary rays, this type of cut yields
boards with ray flake and gives oak
amazing strength, making it less likely to
crack, check or warp.
Side-hung and Center-guided Drawers
No plastic parts to break, no metal to
rust and scratch: just honest to goodness
hand craftsmanship. The center guide
keeps drawers from skewing sideways
while side suspension keeps drawers
level when heavily loaded. Stickley
drawers never scrape the bottom, and
open and close with ease forever.
Quadralinear Posts
Quadralinear posts are crafted of four
quartersawn solid white oak boards that
are mitered and glued around a center
post. This technique results in strong
solid wood construction and the beauty
of ray flake on all four sides.
Tenons
A signature element of Stickley construction
is tenons- boards whose ends have
been cut for insertion into a mortise. A
blind tenon is concealed within the mortise,
while a through tenon (shown above)
projects beyond the depth of the mortise.
Keyed Tenons
A distinctive Mission construction
method, a keyed tenon projects beyond
the mortise in the side of the piece and
is slotted with a wedge shaped block.
These three parts (the side, the tenon
and the key) come together in perfect
harmony so that the piece does not crack.
Tongue and Groove Joints
This woodworking technique ensures
accurate board alignment and gives
individually matched boards the
appearance of one solid piece of wood.
This joint does not crack or split.
Blind Dovetailed Cross Rails
When you open a drawer with dovetails,
you know you have found good furniture.
But what about dovetails in places you
cannot see? Stickley dovetails the cross
rails to strengthen cases from side to side
with this no fail self-locking joint, which,
due to aesthetics, is hidden from view on
Mission designs.
Resawn & Book Matched Door Panels
By splitting boards down the center
and then opening them up like a book,
an identical grain pattern is revealed.
This labor intensive process assures
beautifully matched grain panels on all
pieces, as opposed to randomly matched
boards.
Bed Rail Construction
For a good night’s sleep every night, the
side rails of all Stickley beds are mortised
and tenoned into the posts, while the
ends of the rails feature panhead screws
secured into an iron casting – all to ensure
that the bed will not wobble or rock.
Placing of Glass with Quarter Rounds
Instead of using a single sheet of glass
on bookcases, Stickley pieces include
individual panes of glass that are secured
with wood quarter rounds that are mitered
to fit perfectly in place, making the inside
of each door as handsome as the outside.
Ship Lap Planking
A method of layering boards over each
other, each board is sanded, finished
and applied one at a time to the backs of
Stickley bookcases to add character and
beauty to a piece.
A talented craftsman proudly signs his initials on every Stickley piece.
At Stickley, skilled craftspeople create timeless works
of art with loving hands, careful attention to detail and
an eye for exceptional beauty. Stickley has perfected
the furniture making process from beginning to end:
from selecting the finest lumber, to creating the sturdiest
construction features, to finishing each piece of furniture
to be the very best.
Heirloom furniture begins with the careful selection
of the finest solid woods. Wild black cherry from the
Adirondacks mellows beautifully with age, developing a
rich patina. Solid white quartersawn oak is selected for
its beautiful ray flake and incredible strength.
Stickley uses reliable construction techniques, some
that have been wrought for centuries, and many that
are uniquely Stickley. Among the distinctive Stickley
features are dovetailed cross rails, side and center
guided drawers, and pinned chair joints. Not only do
these Stickley characteristics offer additional aesthetics
to a piece of furniture, they also ensure lasting
durability.
Beauty is celebrated in each piece of Stickley furniture,
and particularly in the finishing process. Complex
techniques allow the natural grain of the wood to show
through the finish. Clear dyes stop color from sinking
into subsequent layers. Stains are applied by hand
and penetrate into the wood fiber to blend with natural
wood color tones.

Each Stickley piece is hand sanded with concentrated attention to detail before moving on to the finishing process.
Side hung and center guided drawers are meticulously hand planed and fitted to open and close effortlessly for years to come.
