Sheffield Dulles Showroom Manager, Randy Shannon, Assists IUP Students in Furniture Design Challenge

Sheffield designers are passionate about what they do and often spend their free-time pursuing their love of design, furniture, and art. Randy Shannon, designer and manager of our Dulles showroom, is no exception, recently working with students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a design challenge. Below, Randy explains the project and his experience at IUP. He also included some gorgeous photos of the final designs!

The Sutton Bench

Over the past several months, I have had the opportunity to work with Advanced Woodworking students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).  The University offers undergraduate and graduate classes at The Wood Center at IUP.  Students can receive undergraduate and graduate degrees in various media, including Wood.

During the spring semester of 2016, Advanced Woodworking students were challenged to design a bench that would embody the history and design of the University.  To be called the Sutton Bench after the first building on campus, this item was to reflect the architectural history of the campus without being a reproduction piece and also the bench should use locally harvested Oak, a popular symbol of the University.

Throughout the course of the semester, students worked individually and in teams to design a number of different bench designs.  From these, a final bench design was created incorporating elements from different pieces.  For the end of the semester, students produced a final Sutton Bench, which was officially unveiled to the University on May 5, 2016. The President of the University and the University Trustees were present for the unveiling, as were the students and other members of the University community and the public.

The finished Sutton bench is built of locally harvested Oak and its design elements mirror the Italianate architecture of John Sutton Hall.  This is most apparent in the bench leg design, which is an inverse of the cupola atop the University building.  The back panel has been laser etched with photos of Oak trees on campus.  The photos were taken on April 27, 2016 so the etching can be dated precisely for those interested.  Additional Sutton Benches will be constructed and it is hoped that the sale of these benches can be used to support additional equipment and activities at the Wood Center.

It was a lot of fun for me to have this experience because I got to work with young, enthusiastic artists and I was able to contribute my ideas to the final design.

High Point Furniture Market — Spring 2016

It’s that time of year again! Our Sheffield Furniture & Interiors design team just got back from their trip to High Point Furniture Market in North Carolina. While they were there, they scoped out some of this year’s hottest new designs and trends and kept us up to date with beautiful photos. We spotted a few new color trends—for example, we noticed repeating themes of emerald, navy blue, and gold in various displays throughout the market—and we are loving 2016′s palette.

Check out some of our favorite photos from our design team’s trip and let us know what you enjoyed seeing most!

All the best,

Behind the Scenes — Design Boards

When our designers are working on a project, they put together design boards—collecting fabrics, patterns, floor plans, and accessories and gathering them together in one gorgeous display.

Some of our Rockville designers shared photos with us so we can see what they’re working on now. These beautiful works-in-progress give us a nice preview of their final product. Take a look and see for yourself—you may even find some inspiration for your own interiors, too!

Time for Outdoor Furniture!

This past weekend, the cloudy, gray Pennsylvania days made summer weather feel far off, but the rain and gloom transformed into a gloriously sunny week. Now, spring is in full bloom and soon we’ll be out in our backyards for family barbecues, poolside lounging, and warm evenings under the stars!

To help shake off the winter months and get into the spirit of the upcoming season, I gathered some photos of my favorite outdoor furniture from our collections at Sheffield Furniture & Interiors. I hope you enjoy them and find some inspiration for your own backyard escape, too!

(Don’t forget! April 4th is the last day to order Brown Jordan and have it arrive in time for Memorial Day. So, if you haven’t gotten your Brown Jordan orders in yet, make sure you order before April 4th!)

Pumpkin Roll

INGREDIENTS

3 large eggs

1 cup granulated sugar

2/3 cup canned pumpkin

1 teaspoon lemon juice

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 cup pecans, finely chopped

1 cup confectioners’ sugar, plus more for
sprinkling

Two 3-ounce packages cream cheese, room temperature

1 stick butter (1/2 cup), room temperature

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 17 1/2- by 12 1/2-inch jellyroll pan.

With an electric mixer, beat the eggs, granulated sugar, pumpkin and lemon juice until smooth. Sift together the flour, ginger, salt, baking powder and cinnamon. Add the sifted ingredients to the egg mixture and blend until fully combined. Spread the batter in the jellyroll pan. Sprinkle the dough with the chopped pecans. Bake until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean, 14 minutes. Let the cake cool in the pan for 5 minutes.

Invert the cake onto a wire rack. Sprinkle some of the confectioner’ sugar on a large tea towel and carefully transfer the warm cake to the towel, folding the sides of the towel over the cake. Roll the cake up in the towel and cool in the refrigerator thoroughly for about 45 minutes.

With an electric mixer, combine the confectioners’ sugar, cream cheese, butter and vanilla and beat until smooth. Carefully unroll the cooled cake and spread the mixture on top of the cake. Gently re-roll the cake up and refrigerate it until you’re ready to slice and serve. Dust with confectioners’ sugar just before serving.

Skinny Cranberry Swirl Cheesecake Squares

INGREDIENTS

Cranberry Sauce

3/4 cup fresh cranberries

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 cup water

1/2 teaspoon fresh orange zest
Crust

3 oz gingersnap crumbs (from 12 gingersnap cookies)

1 oz pecans, crushed

1 1/2 tablespoons light butter, melted
Cheesecake

8 oz 1/3 less fat cream cheese

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

6 oz nonfat Greek yogurt

2 egg whites

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

1 tablespoon flour

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and position a rack in the middle of the oven. Line an 8×8-inch baking pan with waxed paper, leaving a 2-inch overhang on all sides.

Begin by preparing the cranberry sauce. Combine the cranberries, sugar, water, and orange zest in a small saucepan. Cook together until the cranberries begin to burst and the mixture turns syrupy, about 6-7 minutes. Remove from the heat, allow to cool as you prepare the remaining ingredients.

Combine the gingersnap crumbs, crushed pecans, and light butter in a small bowl. Stir together to moisten the crumbs, then pour into the prepared baking pan. Spread in an even layer, using the bottom of a drinking glass to help ensure that the crust is even.

In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract with an electric mixer until smooth. Add in the Greek yogurt, egg whites, lemon juice, and flour, mixing until just combined. Pour the cheesecake mixture into the pan, over the crust, and smooth with a spatula.

Add the cooled cranberry mixture to a food processor, and puree until smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add 1/2 tablespoon water. Use a spoon to drop the cranberry sauce over the cheesecake, and then swirl the cranberry sauce with a butter knife.

Bake the cheesecake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Allow the cheesecake to cool to room temperature, and place in the fridge for several hours to get well chilled. Once chilled, cut into squares and serve.

On that sweet note, we wish you a very happy Thanksgiving! We hope your day is full of great food, family, friends, and décor, of course!

All the Best,

Time to Shine

From runways to recliners, metallics are making their mark as the hot new trend that’s stealing the show this fall. Gold, silver, and bronze tones are excellent for accent pieces as well as for bold and luxurious full room statements. We love this fall trend and we’re sure you will, too! For some inspiration, check out our photos and see how we’re using metallics in our designs:
