Royal Pine is a hand-knotted wool Indian carpet. Woven on looms located in the ancient city of Jaipur, this carpet and the rugs from this area were an inspiration to William Morris and other noted Arts and Crafts leaders in their design of textiles and wallpapers. This design is from a carpet woven during the reign of Jahangir (r.1605-27). During this Mughal king's reign, trade with the West brought European botanical paintings to India, which inspired Mughal artists to reproduce their own plants naturalistically. The flower heads on this superb rug fall within a trellis formed by curved serrated leaves. The color pallete reflects the traditional colors from the Rajasthan region where Jaipur is located. Similar floral work can be seen on the walls, ceiling, and floor of the famed Taj Mahal. Woven by expert weavers using the traditionally exceptional wool and dyes of this region, this carpet will last many lifetimes to be enjoyed by generations to come.
